TICKS:  There are 850 tick species, about 100 of which are capable of transmitting diseases.  Ticks are bloodsucking external parasites that feed on humans, wild and domestic mammals, birds, and others.  They are totally dependent on the blood/tissue fluids of the host.  The longer an infected tick feed, the greater the chances of infection.  Ticks are usually found from ground level to three feet above grown.  A tick uses carbon dioxide, scent, body heat and other stimuli to find a host.  Proper outdoor lawn treatment can help prevent tick problems.

BED BUGS: Small insects that feed on human blood.  They are usually active at night when people are sleeping.  Adult bed bugs have flat rusty-red-colored oval bodies.  About the size of an apple seed, they are big enough to be seen, but often hide in cracks in furniture, floors, or walls.  When they feed their bodies become brighter red.  They can live for several months without food or water.

In most cases, people carry bed bugs into their homes unknowingly, in infested luggage, furniture, bedding, or clothing.  Bed bugs may also travel between apartments through small crevices and cracks in walls and floors.

You may notice itchy skin welts.  You may also see the bed bugs themselves, small bloodstains from crushed insects, or dark spots from their droppings.

The Health Department recommends that you hire pest control professional licensed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to get rid of the bed bugs.
